School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) Policy

Rationale/​Purpose:

To ensure that all clinical adjunct track faculty (defined below) receive annual evaluations. The School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) is best served when it supports faculty to meet their career and professional goals while at the same time maintaining a high-performing workforce. Faculty are best served when they receive regular, timely feedback on their performance and career growth. All clinical adjunct track faculty will have the opportunity to interact with the appropriate SMPH department chair on an annual basis.

Definitions:
Academic campus
Any one of the following three regional campus partners of SMPH, each led by an associate dean for that academic campus:
  • Eastern academic campus – Advocate Aurora Health Care
  • Northern academic campus – Marshfield Clinic Health System
  • Western academic campus – Gundersen Health System
Clinical adjunct track faculty
SMPH faculty members with clinical adjunct track faculty appointments (affiliated with a SMPH department or an academic campus), as described in the SMPH Guidelines for Appointment of Clinical Adjunct Track Faculty
Policy:

  1. Annual Review

    1. All clinical adjunct track faculty members will be reviewed annually by one of the following:
      1. The associate dean for the academic campus where they are employed, or the associate dean’s designee.
      2. The chair of the department holding the appointment or the department chair’s designee.
      3. The equivalent SMPH-approved leader.
    2. Annual reviews may be delayed if the clinical adjunct track faculty member is on a leave of absence.
    3. Annual reviews will evaluate the clinical adjunct track faculty member’s performance with respect to:
      1. The individual’s job description and responsibilities as they apply to their pro bono service requirement; and
      2. SMPH standards of professional behavior as stated in the SMPH Bylaws.
      3. For assistant and associate clinical adjunct track, a discussion of preparedness for promotion to the next academic rank.
    4. The associate dean for clinical adjunct track faculty at academic campuses will provide an attestation of completion of reviews to the SMPH dean or dean’s designee annually. The department chair will be informed by SMPH HR that the clinical adjunct faculty reviews at academic campuses have been completed.
    5. The department chair will provide an attestation of completion of reviews for all departmental clinical adjunct track faculty to the SMPH dean or dean’s designee annually.
    6. Failure of a reviewee/reviewer to comply with this policy in a timely manner will be reported to the SMPH dean or department chair and may result in early termination of the clinical adjunct track faculty appointment.

  2. Annual Meeting with Department Chair

    1. Each clinical adjunct track faculty member will have the opportunity to meet with the appropriate SMPH department chair, in-person or virtually, in a group or individual setting, at least once per academic year.
    2. Each year, department chairs will attest that this opportunity was provided to all clinical adjunct track faculty affiliate with their department.
