School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) Policy

Rationale/​Purpose:

To outline the academic standards for the health professions programs (non-M.D.) in the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH). In addition to the requirements outlined in this policy, students must meet the academic standards set by SMPH and the applicable health professions program.

Definitions:
Health professions program (non- M.D.)
Any of the SMPH Doctor of Physical Therapy, Master of Genetic Counselor Studies, Master of Physician Assistant Studies, and Master of Public Health programs.
Policy:
  1. Continuation in a health professions degree program is at the discretion of the program and SMPH.
    1. Failure to meet the program’s academic expectations can result in disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal from the program.
    2. If a student is not making satisfactory progress in regard to academic expectations, the program will determine if remediation or dismissal is recommended.
  2. The minimum standards to remain in good academic standing are as follows:
    1. Maintain a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) or better for courses used to meet degree requirements during and at completion of the program.
    2. Earn a GPA of 3.0 or better each semester.
    3. Achieve satisfactory performance in any non-graded course.

    Note: Grade minima for required courses are program specific.

  3. Grades of incomplete, unsatisfactory, or fail/no credit, or that otherwise fail to meet conditions set by the health professions program(omit comma) may result in required remediation activities, academic probation, a hold on future enrollment, or suspension or dismissal from the program.
  4. If a grade of incomplete, unsatisfactory, or fail/no credit, or that otherwise fails to meet conditions set by the health professions program results in dismissal, the grievance procedure (SMPH-8020 Resolution of Health Professions Programs Student Grievances) must be resolved prior to commencing the dismissal process should the student wish to grieve the grade.
  5. Students who have been dismissed from a health professions program for academic reasons may petition for appeal in accordance with SMPH-8060 School of Medicine and Public Health – Health Professions Programs (Non-M.D.) Student Appeals and as set forth in the Health Professions Program (Non-M.D.) Student Appeals Process.
  6. Information on the academic standards and the appeals process will be included in each health professions program’s student handbook.
