School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) Policy
Rationale/Purpose:
The below policy ensures students in health professions programs with a mandatory clinical component complete drug screens in a fair and equitable manner and that students are prepared to comply with clinical site requirements.
Definitions:
Health professions program
Any of the SMPH Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Master of Genetic Counselor Students, Master of Physician Assistant Studies, or Master of Public Health Programs.
Policy:
Health professions programs with mandatory clinical components (Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Master of Genetic Counselor Students, and Master of Physician Assistant Studies) shall require students complete and successfully pass a drug screening by a deadline set by the program.
Health professions programs shall use a secure clinical management software program to facilitate the drug screening and store its results.
Information regarding how to complete the drug screening, including information regarding cost, shall be communicated to students prior to matriculation and included in the relevant health professions program’s handbook.
