University Policy

Rationale/​Purpose:

Course syllabi convey course expectations, support student learning, and serve as durable records of the learning experience. The purpose of this policy is to outline the requirements for course syllabi.

Policy:

Every UW-Madison group instruction course must have a syllabus that fulfills the following requirements.

  • Key course offering information.
  • Instructor to student communication.
  • Academic statements and policies.

Detailed information about each component and what is required in each is available from the Course Syllabi at UW-Madison webpage. For undergraduate independent/directed study courses, please consult UW-1006, Independent/Directed Study for Undergraduates.

Each academic department must maintain a record of syllabi from all course sections in compliance with UW-1086, Department Responsibility for Maintaining Course Syllabi.
