Rationale/​Purpose:

The UW–Madison Office of Admissions and Recruitment collects information from visitors to its website with the intent of providing a better experience for prospective students. This policy defines the data collected and how it is used.

Definitions:
Cookies
Messages that web servers pass to a web browser when an internet site is visited. The browser stores each message on the local hard drive. These files typically contain information about the visit to the web page, as well as any information the visitor volunteers, such as name and interests.
Non-Personally Identifiable Information (non-PII)
Data that cannot be used on its own to identify an individual, such as aggregated data.
Personally Identifiable Information (PII)
For purposes of this policy, data that could potentially identify a specific individual, e.g., name, address, date of birth, email address, telephone number, race/ethnicity, or high school.
Scope:

Individuals who visit the Office of Admissions and Recruitment website.

Policy:

The Office of Admissions and Recruitment collects two kinds of information from its website:

  • Personally Identifiable Information (PII) that is provided by the end user. This information is used by UW-Madison to provide a prospective student with more engaging content specific to their interests as well as to provide pre-filled forms and tailored to-do lists.
  • Anonymous data that is non-Personally Identifiable (non-PII). This information is used by UW-Madison in aggregate to, for example, determine the number of visitors to the website and the number of individuals interested in freshman or transfer student information which enables the Office of Admissions and Recruitment to better align content with the way visitors use the site.

The information that is collected by the Office of Admissions and Recruitment is stored as permanent cookies which remain on the end user's computer after the browser is closed. These cookies are used to maintain a self-moderated admissions checklist for the prospective student, display academic and extracurricular interests selected in previous visits to the site, and to determine the frequency of visits. These cookies do not contain any PII.
