University Policy

Rationale/​Purpose:

UW System Administrative Policy 805, Tuition and Fee Policies for Credit Instruction requires Board of Regent approval of tuition rates except where the Board has delegated tuition setting authority to the President or to chancellors. Approved tuition rates are implemented and assessed at each UW System institution based on the structures in place at the individual institution. This policy provides the details regarding the practices for tuition and fee assessment at UW–Madison.

Definitions:
Segregated fees
Charges, in addition to academic student fees and tuition, assessed to all residential students for student services, activities, programs, and facilities that support the mission of University of Wisconsin System and UW-Madison. Details are provided in UW System Administrative Policy 820, Segregated University Fees.
Tuition
Includes both academic student fees and nonresident tuition. In the State of Wisconsin statute, the term “academic student fees” generally applies to resident instructional fees paid by all students, and the term “tuition” applies to the additional amount paid by nonresidents.
Tuition rate
The dollar amount associated with a tuition structure. Approved tuition rates for service-based pricing tuition structures are maintained in the Lumen Programs Curriculum Management System.
Tuition schedule
The combination of residency, credit load, and tuition structure that determines tuition assessment amount.
Tuition structure
Type of tuition charged based on factors (program, program level, residency, credit load, etc.) approved by the Board of Regents or designated authority.
Scope:

This applies to the assessment of tuition and fees for all for-credit instruction at UW–Madison.

Policy:
  1. Tuition assessment for all students enrolled in for-credit courses is based on elements of the governance approved academic structure including plans, subplans, academic group, career, the tuition structure, and tuition rate where applicable, for academic programs (plans and subplans) as maintained in Lumen Programs.
  2. The Madison Budget Office maintains the university tuition schedule.
  3. Segregated student fees are assessed for all students not enrolled in 100% online programs (based on governed plan, subplan attributes). Rare requests for exceptions to this are noted in Lumen Programs. Exceptions are considered by the Madison Budget Office.
  4. Within a tuition structure, there may be different charges based on residency, visa status, or dissertator status. This is described in the tuition schedule.
  5. Students in Doctor of Philosophy programs whose academic departments have noted they have reached dissertator status are charged a flat (dissertator) rate as described in the university tuition schedule.
