After passing the preliminary examination, a candidate for a doctoral degree must defend and deposit their dissertation within five years. Failure to do so may require another preliminary examination and admission to candidacy a second time. The five-year limit begins on the first day of instruction of the semester/term (fall, spring, or summer) immediately following completion of the preliminary examination.
