University Policy

Rationale/​Purpose:

The Wisconsin Union is a membership organization. The buildings, facilities, and programs of the Wisconsin Union are open to Members, university associates, and invited guests of the university. The Wisconsin Union is not open to the public except for those events specifically identified as such in UWS 18.07(6).

Definitions:
Wisconsin Union Facility
Indoor and outdoor locations under the control and management of the Wisconsin Union (e.g., Memorial Union, Union South, The Terrace, Pyle Center, Fluno Center).
Policy:
  1. Union Patrons
    1. All members and guests must abide by UW-2058 Wisconsin Union Conduct and Use and other applicable university, local, state, and federal regulations.
    2. Types of Union Patrons
      1. Wisconsin Union (Union) Member
        1. Enrolled UW-Madison Student
          • Membership fee is included as part of segregated fees paid semesterly
          • Wiscard serves as membership card
          • Students enrolled in the spring semester and who plan to re-enroll for the fall semester retain membership privileges during the intervening summer.
        2. Life Member of the Wisconsin Union Association (or Spouse/Partner)
        3. Annual Union Membership
      2. Corporate Member
      3. University Associate
        1. UW-Madison Faculty, Academic Staff, and University Staff
        2. Employees of the following university-related and governmental agencies, with proof of employment:
          • U.S. Forest Products Laboratory
          • UW Hospital & Clinics (campus location only)
          • UW System Administration
          • William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital
          • Wisconsin Foundation & Alumni Association
          • Wisconsin State Historical Society
        3. UW-Madison Guest Students (individuals auditing classes)
      4. Invited Guest of the University
        1. Attendees of UW–Madison conferences or events (must provide name badge, ticket, registration, or other proof of conference or event attendance)
        2. Visitors on UW-Madison coordinated tours or an official visit to the university
        3. U.S. military personnel in uniform or individuals with a current military I.D. (active military, veteran, or military family member)
        4. Students currently enrolled at any campus of the Universities of Wisconsin
        5. Students currently enrolled in joint UW/Edgewood College or UW/Madison College classes
        6. Guest of a Wisconsin Union Member or University Associate for a specific event and is accompanied by the member while using Wisconsin Union facilities
        7. Holders of Wisconsin Union Daily Memberships
    3. Membership fees are set by the Wisconsin Union Association and Wisconsin Union Council in collaboration with the Wisconsin Union staff.
    4. Non-students under the age of 18 are not eligible for membership.
    5. Membership may be denied to individuals with a record of misconduct in Wisconsin Union facilities prior to attaining an official membership status.
    6. Individuals with revoked or denied membership, but who require access to Wisconsin Union services (e.g., bus pass distribution, identification card) will be granted limited access to Wisconsin Union facilities by the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Union (or their designee).
  2. Benefits
    1. All Wisconsin Union patrons are eligible to access food units, lounges, galleries, and Wisconsin Union-sponsored free programs (e.g., Terrace programs)
    2. Additional benefits are as follows:
      1. Wisconsin Union Members
        1. Ability to reserve spaces for events in accordance with UW-2044 Wisconsin Union Member Events and Weddings and UW-2046 Wisconsin Union Space Reservations
        2. Special pricing on select Wisconsin Union events, activities, programs, products, services, and spaces
        3. May sponsor guests to Wisconsin Union facilities
      2. Corporate Members – May reserve space for events in accordance with UW-2044 Wisconsin Union Member Events and Weddings and UW-2046 Wisconsin Union Space Reservations
      3. University Associates
        1. May sponsor guests to Wisconsin Union facilities
        2. Special pricing on select Wisconsin Union products or services
  3. Misconduct
    1. Union patrons may have access to Wisconsin Union facilities or membership revoked as a result of misconduct.
    2. UW-Madison student misconduct will be delegated to the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards
    3. Misconduct by non-UW-Madison students will be addressed and disciplinary action will be decided by Wisconsin Union staff communicated to the Executive Director.
    4. Appeals of decisions on misconduct may be made to the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Union, who has final say on disciplinary action.
