University Policy

Rationale/​Purpose:

To provide guidelines under which Wisconsin Union officers may take corrective disciplinary actions relating to the performance or behavior in the position in an effort to improve such performance or behavior.

Policy:

1. A question or complaint about performance may be brought to the officers or to the social education program director. The vice president (VP)-program administration (or the president's designee) will investigate the question or complaint. The Union Council Executive Committee will determine whether disciplinary action is appropriate. Action will only be taken for a just cause and in a timely manner.
2. The VP-program administration (or the president's designee) will notify the person who complained that action was taken. If further action is requested, requests should be forwarded to the Union Council Executive Committee.
3. Disciplinary actions available to the Union Council Executive Committee include reprimand, probation, and/or recall (defined below). 
   1. Reprimand: A discussion followed by a letter including:
      1. Nature of the performance or behavior giving rise to the reprimand.
      2. Steps the Union Council Executive Committee took to inform the committee director or coordinator.
      3. Action the committee director or coordinator must take to correct the performance or behavior.
      4. Additional action the Union Council Executive Committee may take if the performance or behavior does not improve.

      Unless circumstances are unusual, a reprimand should always be given in person with an opportunity for the committee director or coordinator to discuss it.

   2. Probation: A written statement from the president outlining a specific time period during which performance will be evaluated on a continual basis.
   3. Recall: A majority vote of the Union Council is required to relieve a Directorate person of his/her duties. The Directorate person under consideration may not vote. The Union Council Executive Committee will recommend a recall to the council consistent with these guidelines. The officers may suspend the person until the next council meeting.
