University Policy

Rationale/​Purpose:

To provide guidelines under which Wisconsin Union officers and the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) may take corrective disciplinary actions relating to the performance or behavior of a WUD committee member in an effort to improve such performance and behavior.

Policy:

1. A question or complaint about performance may be brought to the officers, WUD director, or the social education program director. The vice president (VP)-program administration, with the appropriate WUD director, will investigate the question or complaint. The officers and WUD director will determine whether disciplinary action is necessary. Action will only be taken for a just cause and in a timely manner.
2. The VP-program administration will notify the person who complained that action was taken. If further action is requested, requests should be forwarded to the VP-program administration.
3. Disciplinary action may include reprimand, probation, and/or removal.
   1. Reprimand includes:
      1. A discussion with the committee member.
      2. A letter outlining the actions to be taken by the committee member and further action the officers or WUD directors may take if there is no indication of improved behavior.
   2. If the behavior does not improve as outlined in the letter, further action may include probation and/or removal.
   3. Unless circumstances are unusual, a reprimand should always be given in person with an opportunity for the committee member to discuss the action.
   4. Probation includes a specified period of time where the committee member's behavior is evaluated. Additionally, the officers and a WUD director may impose restrictions on the responsibilities of the committee member.
   5. Removal is the final action that can be taken and should be given careful consideration, after consultation between the officers and the WUD director.
4. Committee members may appeal disciplinary action in a written letter to the Union Council Executive Committee. Such disciplinary action may be appealed to Union Council.
