University Policy

Rationale/​Purpose:

In specific instances of nonacademic misconduct, parent/guardian involvement may be appropriate. The University has established a policy for the parameters for parent/guardian involvement that are consistent with provisions in the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA).

Policy:

1. Generally, a parent/guardian will be involved to assist in supporting students as a result of health or safety concerns, particularly related to drugs or alcohol, or when a student under 21 years old is placed on disciplinary probation for an alcohol or drug incident.
2. If a student believes that parent involvement would pose a danger to the student or others, they may appeal to a Director of the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards by following the instructions in their finding letter following their disciplinary conference.
