- The housing of animals outside a dedicated vivarium for greater than 12 hours for USDA covered animals or activities, or 24 hours for non-USDA covered animals requires Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval.
- Such housing must be based on clearly defined needs that cannot be accommodated within dedicated animal facilities, and the justification for laboratory housing must be in an IACUC-approved animal care and use protocol.
- The protocol must also contain details of husbandry practices and the maximum duration of laboratory housing.
- The IACUC must inspect and approve the location before animals can be housed there.
See this companion guidance document for physical, training, occupational health, and veterinary access requirements for laboratory housing locations.
