Pharmaceutical-grade compounds should be used, when available, for all animal-related activities.
Principal investigators must describe and scientifically justify the use of non-pharmaceutical-grade substances in an animal use protocol, which must be approved by the appropriate Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC).
For the purposes of this policy, pharmaceutical-grade compounds include:
U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved veterinary or human compounds specifically formulated for clinical application.
Veterinary or human pharmaceutical compounds listed in the:
United States Pharmacopeia (USP).
USP-National Formulary (USP-NF).
British Pharmacopeia (BP).
European Pharmacopeia (EP).
