University Policy

Policy:
  1. Pharmaceutical-grade compounds should be used, when available, for all animal-related activities.
  2. Principal investigators must describe and scientifically justify the use of non-pharmaceutical-grade substances in an animal use protocol, which must be approved by the appropriate Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC).
  3. For the purposes of this policy, pharmaceutical-grade compounds include:
    1. U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved veterinary or human compounds specifically formulated for clinical application.
    2. Veterinary or human pharmaceutical compounds listed in the:
      1. United States Pharmacopeia (USP).
      2. USP-National Formulary (USP-NF).
      3. British Pharmacopeia (BP).
      4. European Pharmacopeia (EP).
  4. Resources:
    1. Guidance for protocol justification for the use of non-pharmaceutical compounds
    2. Guidance in preparing and storing non-pharmaceutical compounds
    3. Standard operating procedure (SOP) for mixing sodium pentobarbital for anesthesia
    4. SOP for mixing sodium pentobarbital for euthanasia
