Nonaffiliated Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) members are chosen to enhance the public’s confidence in the unfettered objectivity of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocol and program review process. The unaffiliated member is regarded as a full IACUC member and is afforded opportunities to participate in committee functions equivalent to those of all other IACUC members. To conform to relevant laws and regulations and ensure objectivity, the following criteria are used for the selection of nonaffiliated ACUC members on the UW–Madison campus:
- Not a current, recent (<10 years), or recently retired (<10 years) employee of any division/unit of UW–Madison, including adjunct employment; consistent with Animal Welfare Act (AWA) Regulations 2.31,b,3,ii; Public Health Service (PHS) Policy IV,A,3,b,4; and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Guide), 8th edition, p 24.
- Not a primary family member (grandparent, parent, sibling, child, grandchild, spouse) of any of the above; consistent with AWA Regulations 2.31,b,3,ii; PHS Policy IV,A,3,b,4; and the Guide, 8th edition, p 24.
- Not a primary family member of a currently enrolled, credit-earning student of any UW–Madison school, college, program, or unit; consistent with AWA Regulations 2.31,b,3,ii; PHS Policy IV,A,3,b,4; and the Guide, 8th edition, p 24.
- Not a current laboratory animal user either directly or through consulting or similar tangential services; consistent with AWA Regulations 2.31,b,3,ii and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal Care Policy #15.
