Participating in intercollegiate athletics as a member of a UW–Madison athletics team is a privilege that is earned through hard work and discipline in the athletic arena, in the classroom, and in the community. UW–Madison student-athletes are public figures and their conduct reflects not only themselves but also teammates, coaches, the Athletic Department, and university. A student-athlete accepts the unique and special responsibilities that go along with their membership on a UW–Madison athletic team.
A head coach has the discretion to determine standards for membership on their team with approval from the sport administrator and within the applicable university, conference, and NCAA rules.
Each head coach may develop team rules. These rules may be more restrictive than Athletic Department, university, conference, or NCAA rules.
The head coach has the authority to suspend and/or dismiss any student-athlete on their team if the student-athlete does not meet team expectations/standards, violates team rules, or otherwise behaves inappropriately separate and apart from proceedings under the Student-Athlete Discipline policy. A coach’s decision regarding an individual’s status/membership on a team is final.
