Rationale/​Purpose:

The purpose of this policy is to establish how the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics awards coaches with post season bonuses. 

Scope:

The policy applies to full-time head & assistant coaches and strength coaches in all sports.

Policy:

  1. Overview

    1. The University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Intercollegiate Athletics permits post season bonuses for coaches to be recognized in the form of cash awards funded by outside sources in accordance with NCAA rules.
    2. Awards shall be approved only if they are in recognition of post season achievements as specified in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Post Season Bonus Schedule.
    3. Any awards for unspecified achievements will not be approved.
    4. The payment of these awards is subject to the availability of funds from an outside source and is not guaranteed by the University.

  2. Award Eligibility & Procedures

    1. Coaches will be eligible for a post season bonus based on the recommendation of the athletics director (based on the performance evaluation conducted by the sport administrator) and approval of the Athletic Board. The sport administrator's evaluation will involve careful consideration of the following:
      1. Academic success of the team
      2. Compliance with policies (division, athletic board, NCAA, Big Ten, WCHA)
      3. Student-athlete experience
      4. Athletic success reflected in eligibility for these awards
    2. Award amounts shall be calculated using the coach's regular earnings for the 12 months preceding the month of the bonus payment and calculated as a percent specified in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Post Season Bonus Schedule.
      1. In the event a coach has not been employed as a coach for 12 months prior to the bonus payout, the bonus will be calculated based on actual wages earned during the months they were in the coaching position.
      2. Football award amounts are based on the combined university contracted base salary for the fiscal year of achievement of head football coach, offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, all assistant football coaches, and all football-specific strength and conditioning coaches, distributed at the discretion of the head football coach and athletic director.
    3. All award payments will be paid through the university's payroll system.
    4. Coaches of multiple sports are eligible for one highest finish award, regardless of sport, not to exceed 20% cap total award (excluding coach of the year awards).
