Schedule Policy

A six-day maximum of classes missed per semester. The policy was adopted by the ACC to address student-athlete academic concerns. The policy rules apply to both team and individual sports.

The ACC may waive the six-day policy provided the following: (per 6-8-95 AAC mtg., revised 5-6-09)

• Student-athlete’s cumulative GPA going into the semester in question is at least a 2.5.
• 2nd semester freshman has at least a 2.5 from first semester.
• To qualify for a potential waiver of the policy, a schedule exceeding the six-day policy must be presented to the ACC by the coach at a committee meeting (per 9-13-01 AAC mtg.).

Following approval of each sport’s schedule, the Chair of the ACC will provide written notification to the head coach of the approval with the stipulation that no student-athletes with less than a 2.5 GPA may miss more than six class days each semester.

Policy Interpretations

1. Tournaments with mandatory qualifying do not count in six-day total.
2. NCAA championship events do not count in six-day total.
3. Multiple team events or invitationals count as the following: Each day of competition = one day missed(e.g. if there are several matches/games in one day, that will total as one day)
4. There may be several games/meets (as in track & field, tennis) that only individuals needing to qualify will attend. Coaches will take a partial squad to different games/meets.
5. Travel times and day/time equivalency:

Teams departing:

• • • On or after 2:30 p.m. = no days of class missed 
    • At noon or = ½ day before 2:30 p.m. (12:00-2:29)
    • Before noon = 1 day

Procedure for Schedule Approval

Competition schedules are submitted by the coaches to the Sport Administrator for initial review [per 9-13-94 Academic Affairs Committee (AAC) mtg.] The schedules are then forwarded by the Sport Administrator to the Compliance Office for ACC review. If a schedule meets Schedule Policy guidelines (outlined below) it is brought to the ACC for automatic approval. If the proposed schedule does not adhere to the Schedule Policy, the ACC must give final approval to all schedules.

The Academics and Compliance Committee(ACC) of the Athletic Board grants the Chair the ability to make time-sensitive, routine competition schedule decisions. Routine scheduling decisions include competition schedules that do not violate the missed class policy, the American Indian mascot policy, or one-for-one contest substitutions that do not increase the number of previously approved missed class days.The Chair will report back to the committee at the next ACC meeting any schedule decisions made under this procedure.
