School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) Policy

Rationale/​Purpose:

To ensure that all School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) faculty (as defined below) receive annual performance evaluations. SMPH is best served when it supports faculty to meet their career and professional goals while at the same time maintaining a high-performing workforce. Faculty are best served when they receive ongoing feedback on their performance and career growth. This translates to outstanding education for SMPH students and furthers the mission and vision of the school.

Definitions:
Faculty
All SMPH faculty holding a paid, non-affiliate appointment in the rank of assistant professor, associate professor, or full professor on any employment track—clinical health sciences, clinician teacher, tenure, teaching, or research—as defined in the SMPH Faculty Appointment Policy and the Faculty Policies and Procedures (FPP). Excludes individuals with the rank of instructor, honorary, emeritus, or trainee as defined in SMPH policies. Also excludes clinical adjunct track faculty (they are covered by the SMPH Clinical Adjunct Track Faculty Performance Review Policy) and individuals with joint appointments whose tenure homes are in a non-SMPH department, unless otherwise determined by the department chair.
Policy:
  1. Each faculty member will be reviewed annually (as described in Sec. II below) by the chair of their department or the chair’s designee, unless delayed because the faculty member is on a leave of absence or sabbatical.
  2. For faculty members with appointments of greater than 50% in an administrative unit (e.g., academic affairs, dean’s office, centers/institutes, or UW Health), for whom annual reviews are conducted by the administrative unit leader/leader’s designee (e.g., dean, senior associate dean, center director, health system CEO), only the administrative unit annual review is required. The department chair or their designee may conduct an annual review of the faculty member’s work within the department if they choose to do so.
  3. For a faculty member with dual appointments in two departments, the primary review will be done in the department that is the tenure home or the promotional home of the faculty member. The department chairs will agree whether a review by the secondary department will be included in the primary review.
  4. Annual reviews will evaluate performance with respect to:
    1. The individual’s job description and responsibilities.
    2. SMPH standards of professional behavior as stated in the SMPH Bylaws.
    3. For Assistant and Associate Professors – discuss timeline and readiness for promotion to the next rank.
  5. Annual reviews will include mutually agreed upon goals for the next year.
  6. An attestation of completion of the annual reviews, signed by the department chair, will be provided by the chair or chair’s designee or the administrative unit leader/leader’s designee to the SMPH dean or dean’s designee.
  7. Failure of a reviewee/reviewer to comply in a timely manner will be reported to the dean or department chair and may result in disciplinary action.
