This policy defines the criteria for students to repeat courses.
Graduate students pursuing Master's or PhD degrees in academic programs under the purview of the Graduate School.
A student can repeat a didactic course if they or their program determine it is necessary. Both grades are used in calculating the student’s graduate grade-point average; however, the course will count only once toward the Graduate School’s minimum graduate residence, degree, and coursework (50%) credit requirements.
A repeated course appears on the student’s transcript with a lower-case ‘x’ immediately before the course name.
Courses where content changes, e.g., seminars, special topics, research, and thesis, can be repeated within the same term or in a different term. Sometimes program authorization is necessary for enrollment a second time. Upon successful completion of a course, a student will earn credit and the course will be applied to the Graduate School’s minimum graduate residence, degree, and coursework (50%) credit requirements, as long as the course content is not the same and the course is not audited or graded pass/fail.
A topics course appears on the student’s transcript with the course title and the topic as a course sub-line.
