- Bicycle owners may use the Wisconsin Union bike racks as temporary parking. The bike racks are not intended for the long-term storage of bicycles. Bike owners are not required to remove their bikes at the end of each day; however, owners should remove their bicycles within a reasonable time period.
- The Wisconsin Union may remove bikes from Union facilities and racks under any of the following conditions:
- The bike obstructs building entrances or ADA accessible pathways.
- The bike is parked on the Terrace.
- The bike is found within the building.
- The bike has been parked at a bike rack longer than is deemed reasonable and/or is considered abandoned.
- For conditions A-C above, Union staff may confiscate the bike immediately and place the bike in storage.
- The procedure for removing abandoned bikes (II.D above) will be as follows:
- The bike will be tagged with a notice specifying the violation and giving the owner 10 days to remove the bike. Standard notices are obtained by the Union through the UW–Madison Police Department.
- A record will be kept of the placement of tags.
- If, after 10 days, the owner has not been removed the bike, then the bike will be removed by Wisconsin Union employees and put into storage
- The bike owner will be charged a $10 fee for any bike that is placed in storage. This fee is paid prior to the Wisconsin Union returning the bicycle to the owner.
- The Wisconsin Union accepts no responsibility for any damage or loss of any bike stored on or removed from university property. This includes damage to bike locks that may be cut by the Union during removal.
- If the owner does not reclaim their bike within 30 days from the date that it is put into storage, then the bike will be transferred to the UW Solid Waste Alternative warehouse for sale. The bike will be priced by UW SWAP staff.
- Enforcement and implementation of this policy will be the responsibility of the Assistant Director-Facilities, or designee.
