University Policy

Rationale/​Purpose:

UW-Madison Transportation Services maintains waitlists for different permits in specific parking lots for applicants without a parking assignment or who are requesting a change in their parking assignment. This policy outlines how UW-Madison Transportation Services utilizes and maintains waitlists for parking assignment requests.

Scope:

Faculty, staff, students, and employees of affiliated agencies (including the UW Foundation, UW Health Medical Foundation, UW Shared Services, UW System, State Historical Society, and various outside groups).

Policy:
  1. Waitlists are established only for base lot (including reduced cost), park and ride, Flex, carpool, and business alternate permits.
  2. Applicants with a valid Wiscard/UW Health ID who apply for parking are placed on waitlists for the requested lots if the applicant does not receive a permit assignment.
  3. Customers who claim a parking assignment may be removed from all waitlists. Customers may reapply for a product and place their name on the waitlist for up to four lot choices. Additional instructions and information will be communicated to customers with their initial permit offer.
  4. Eligible applicants with a valid Wiscard/UW Health ID who are new to the parking system may apply throughout the year. A maximum of four lot and product choices may be entered on waitlists for applicants without an annual assignment.
  5. Waitlists are used to make additional assignments to parking lots as vacancies occur. Lot capacity is constantly monitored. Assignments are managed as space becomes available.
  6. Waitlists will be used to make additional carpool assignments as space becomes available in carpool lots.
  7. Waitlists are maintained by UW-Madison Transportation Services for all campus lots by merging applicants from all Transportation Units into one list per product per lot. The applicant’s priority number (assigned by their Unit Transportation Coordinator) determines their placement on the campus-wide waiting lists for their chosen products and lots.
  8. Waitlists change frequently as new applications, assignments, and cancellations are processed. A new applicant with a higher priority will be placed ahead of those with lower priority. After the initial round of parking offers, applicants with no assigned parking will be offered a product before customers with parking are offered a different product, based on their parking priority.
  9. As space becomes available, UW-Madison Transportation Services will electronically notify applicants on waiting lists that their parking assignment has been approved. Applicants will be removed from the waitlist if the assignment is not claimed by the deadline date.
  10. Lots with open spaces (after initial applications have been processed and assignments offered) may be available for purchase under “Annual Permit Availability”. Applicants are encouraged to purchase a permit in an available lot rather than apply for lots with waitlists. Refer to the UW-Madison Transportation Services website for the status of lot availability.
