The Graduate School automatically provides supplements to some external agency fellowships received by graduate students and will consider requests to supplement other external agency fellowships received by graduate students.
Graduate students pursuing Master's or PhD degrees in academic programs under the purview of the Graduate School.
In general, University policy requires external fellowships received by students to cover the cost of tuition and fees. If the external funding agency does not provide tuition and fees, the student, their department, or their advisor is expected to pay for tuition and fees. UW-Madison allows for remission of out-of-state tuition for students on external fellowships that provide stipends of at least the equivalent to that of a 33.3% RA.
The Graduate School will make the following exceptions to this policy as funds allow:
The Graduate School can only provide access to health insurance benefits or stipend enhancement if the student is payrolled through the university. If this is not the default procedure, the student must submit this request with the funding agency.
Graduate School supplementary funds are not provided for fellowships or traineeships supporting students in either professional or non-pooled programs.
The following fellowships have been determined to be prestigious and are automatically approved for supplementation:
Academic programs may request supplementation from the Graduate School for external fellowships its students receive that are not on the approved supplementation list. Note that these requests must come from the academic program in which the student is enrolled, not from individual students or advisors. To request supplementation for a fellowship not on this list, a representative from the program should complete the External Agency Fellowship Supplement Request on SurveyMonkey Apply.
Once the Fellowship Officer receives the completed request the academic program, the Associate Dean responsible for graduate student funding will bring the request to a meeting with the Dean and Associate Deans. They will consult with the relevant Divisional Associate Vice Chancellor for Research as appropriate. Decisions on fellowship supplementation requests will be made within two (2) weeks of submitting the necessary details to the Graduate School.
