University Policy

Rationale/​Purpose:

This policy defines expectations for annual written assessments on progress to degree for PhD students.

Definitions:
Academic program
An area of study that leads to a degree/major, certificate, minor or named option.
Scope:

Academic programs and students pursuing PhD degrees in academic programs under the purview of the Graduate School.

Policy:
  1. Academic programs must provide each enrolled PhD student with an annual written assessment on their progress to degree.
  2. Information may include, but is not limited to:
    1. Student self-evaluation
    2. Milestones completed
    3. Courses completed and/or GPA
    4. Publications, presentations, teaching requirements, and research progress
    5. Input from advisors, mentors, dissertation committee chairs, and advising staff
  3. The student must be given a copy of the written assessment as well as an opportunity to discuss it.
  4. If a student is not making satisfactory progress to degree, follow-up expectations must be clearly stated and shared.
  5. Documentation of assessments must be maintained by programs/departments.
