The purpose of this policy is to outline the appropriate use and need for business alternate parking permits.
Definitions:
Business Alternate Permit
Allows base lot permit holders (see UW-6112) access to one alternate location/lot to conduct business on campus using their personal vehicle. Those faculty/staff who must work at multiple locations on a regular basis may request a business alternate permit if they are applying for (or have already received) an annual base lot permit.
Scope:
Faculty and staff.
Policy:
Business Alternate Permit
UW employees may receive one business alternate decal to display on their parking permit, to allow additional alternate parking to meet business needs on campus.
Business alternate permit stickers will be distributed and affixed on annual parking permit hangtags by University of Wisconsin-Madison Transportation Services.
Permits must be properly displayed, and correct license plate numbers must be on file with UW-Madison Transportation Services.
Business alternates will be assigned by space availability as determined by UW-Madison Transportation Services.
The Unit Transportation Coordinator (UTC) must approve requests using the eligibility criteria indicated below.
Business Alternate permits are available in a limited number of lots on campus based on availability and UW-Madison Transportation Services approval.
The permit hangtag on which the business alternate is affixed must be hung from the vehicle’s rearview mirror or displayed in a plastic pouch on the inside lower left-hand corner of the windshield. Remove all items from the mirror or window that block view of the permit. The entire permit must be visible when the vehicle is parked on campus.
Eligibility Criteria
Appropriate UTC approvals must be secured indicating there is a legitimate work-related reason for the permit to be issued, and the request was based on:
Ease/difficulty of access by bus between the two buildings or work areas.
Need to move supplies and/or equipment between two work areas.
Routine needs to leave campus and return for university business needs.
The accommodation of special parking needs for carpools.
Business alternate requests for Lot 11 must be approved by the Chancellor’s Office prior to being issued by UW-Madison Transportation Services.
Business alternate permits are available to backup drivers of state vanpools.
Applicants must have no history of misuse of business alternate permits.
Restrictions
Business alternate permits are only available to be affixed to annual base lot and Flex permits. Flex permit holders parking in their business alternate location must be in ParkMobile paid status for the entirety of their time parked in the business alternate lot.
Business alternate assignments cannot be closer to the applicant’s office (as defined by applicant’s University of Wisconsin-Madison work mailing address) than their base lot assignment.
Permit holders are limited to one business alternate assignment (permit).
A business alternate permit may be exchanged if the alternate lot is closed for construction or the business needs of the permit holder change. The business alternate permit exchange can only be made on the basis of space availability and if the permit holder qualifies for the new lot based on their priority number.
Business alternate permits do not allow permit holders to park two personal vehicles on campus at one time. Permit holders may only park one vehicle with a permit on campus at a time.
